What Is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic and progressive swelling condition resulting from an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the body.  This condition can manifest as chronic swelling in the arms, legs, face, neck, trunk, and genitalia that does not readily resolve with elevation and/or diuretics.  Its cause is either classified as primary or secondary.

     Congenital or hereditary cause;
            Insult to lymphatic structures related to
     a developmental abnormality                 infections, tumors, radiation, surgery,
     in the lymphatic system                          trauma, venous insufficiency, etc.


Lymphedema May Occur
  • As a result of injury, radiation, or removal of lymph nodes
  • In breast, gynecological, testicular, bladder, colon, prostate, or skin cancer survivors
  • Immediately following surgery or trauma, or several years later
  • As a result of cellulitis infection
  • In Venous Insufficiency

                             Lymphedema in Hand & Arm

Lymphedema can cause the following:

  • A feeling of heaviness in arms/legs
  • Discomfort/pain in extremities
  • Cosmetic deformity
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Repeated episodes of infection, such as cellulitis
  • Impaired mobility
  • Decreased ADL performance
  • Decreased muscle strength
